Verdi: Best decoration in Gràcia Local Festival

Verdi del mig welcomes you to la vida (life)
Verdi del mig is the winner for this year's street decorating competition and, as you can see, they pay homage to life and nature, that's why all ornaments you'll see there are made of all kinds of recycled materials (in fact most of the streets use recycled stuff) as that wasps' nest in the main gate (pictured above).

Woods made of wood! Now that's cool!
These artist have been already the winners 4 times in the last 5 years of competition!!
Check the butterflies pictured below... are they made out of ... bullets??

Don't miss the chance to visit the district this week, the festival ends on Sunday! Here more info on Gràcia Annual Festival.

Stroll around Gràcia's decorated streets

This nice bloke welcomes the visitors to the festival! Scared?
I went for a quick tour this morning in the streets of Gràcia to enjoy and admire the decoration on streets and squares.
Starting the route at Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia, formerly known as Plaça Rius i Taulet (plaça meaning square) you'll find a guardian (pictured above) that will probably kindly let you in a some sort of a castle full of witches, bats, spiders and a dead loving couple. Sounds scary but wait, they're are all statues!

Don't miss the castellers on Sunday 22 at 12.00 in Plaça de la Vila, this year's Annual Human Tower Festival, where the following teams will be competing: Xiquets de Tarragona, Xicots de Vilafranca and Castellers de la Vila de Gràcia. See the map here.

Next, going up Verdi street to see the winner of the street decoration awards!

Hidroelèctrica de Catalunya

Hidroelèctrica, built by Pere Falqués i Urpí between 1896 and 1899
Our second stop in the modernista route is this work formerly known as Central Catalana d'Electricitat, initially built for industrial purposes, set in Avinguda de Vilanova, 12. [map]

On the facades, stone and brick combined with iron elements make some constructive elements stand out acquiring the character of the Falqués architecture.

In the corner, the main gate, made of stone and pottery glazes, stands out; it was intentionally set there to highlight its singularity, and welcomes the visitors giving acces to its unique circular lobby.
Note the brick ornamentation of the façade, the big windows and the small iron beams in the wall that help support the weight of the whole structure all along Avinguda Vilanova. It should be mentioned that the facade was originally crowned even more colorfully than the current one, gone over time, as well as its original chimney, demolished in 1961.

If you're lucky enough you'll be able to get inside this building as sometimes visits are allowed during office hours.

Casa Estapé, Modernista Route first stop

Casa Estapé, a work by Bernadí Martorell i Rius (1907)

Casa Estapé (Estapé house), formerly known as Casa Laplana, a six-story building, is a work of the architect Bernardí Martorell i Rius in 1907 and located in Passeig de Sant Joan 6. [map] Nearest metro station is Arc de Triomf.

Don't miss details such as its ceramic fish scales dome, designed by Jaume Bernades, its wrought iron balconies, carved floral designs on the facade and  the stone balcony on first floor.

This house is the start of Barcelona's modernista route, created and promoted by the Council, and the one we are strictly going to follow.

Go down a bit towards the Arc de Triomf (somehow not included in the official route, but we will check it out too!) and then left to find Vilanova Avenue building of hydropower.

Revetlla de Sant Joan 2010

Sant Joan Midsummer's eve at Barcelona
Nit de Sant Joan: Barcelona on fire from the Park Güell

Tomorrow night Barcelona will celebrate the Feast of Sant Joan (St. John' s or Midsummer's Eve) and welcome in the summer. It is the shortest night of the year, shrouded in magic, symbols and legends. Sant Joan is a night to discover.

Sant Joan is the night of the summer solstice, when the sun reaches its highest point, after which it begins to wane. The Feast of Sant Joan venerates the king of stars as a symbol of fertility and richness, with bonfires being lit to give it the strength it is losing.

For the past 50 years or so in Catalonia, the flama del Canigó (Canigó flame - an emblematic mountain in the Pyrenees) has been part of the celebration. From the top of this mountain, the flames spread throughout the region as fires are lit in each community. The flame has contributed to a new vision of the celebration and signifies Catalan unity and identity.

Catalan people eat coca and drink cava to celebrate the shortest night of the year. Do you want to know more about this typical food and about what is going on in the city for the festival? Then check the council website (in english!) for all the info (including coca recipes!). Be careful with the fireworks that are going to be all around that night!

Bodega 1800, wine and tapas

Tapas: Cabrales con cava and Bacalao con tomate y olivada

This bodega is located in the 1800 Passage, in Carmen Street, in the neighbourhood of the Raval, next to Boqueria Market and the Ramblas.

Bodega 1800 opened in 1952 as a cellar, where you could buy and taste wines, sparkling wines and canned food. Nowadays it's a cosy small wooden winery with barrels used as tables and a great place to go for a glass of wine (or three!) and enjoy some of the best tapas in the city. The cheesy one pictured above is one of my favourites.

The tapas at the Bodega 1800 consists of 4 small topped bread slices (montaditos) from a wide selection of vegetables, seafood, meat and cheese. Each tapa cost 3.50€. Glass of wine or cava at 2.50€.

The city of horrors at CCCB
Exhibition Barcelona – Valencia – Palma: A History of Confluence and Divergence

The CCCB (Contemporary Culture Centre of Barcelona) and the Department of Culture and the Media of the Generalitat de Catalunya will be presenting the exhibition “BVP”. The show looks at the confluences and divergences of three Mediterranean cities: Barcelona, Valencia and Palma.

These are three cities which, at many points in time, have walked in step or moved along the same lines of force, which becomes apparent when we evaluate their history and the way they have evolved in recent centuries. In addition to their common language, we find similarities in architecture and urban planning, a comparable human geography and an urban aesthetic that unites them, though each has conserved its particularities, with periods of greater distance and even confrontation.

The exhibition will showcase the present-day situation of Barcelona, Valencia and Palma, concentrating on two fundamental aspects: the urban and the human landscape.
Sections of the exhibition include: The City of the Future, Language, The Spectacle City, The Ugly City: Urban Planning Corruption and Tourism, The Hedonistic City, The Medieval City.
Check out the BVP's website, you can contribute to the exhibition and submit your own pictures and vote for the most horrible pictures among all the uploaded.
  • When: From 26 May to 12 September 2010
  • Where: CCCB, Montalegre 5 [map]
  • Price: 4.5€ but free on the first Wednesday of every month, Thursdays from 8 to 10 p.m. and Sundays from 3 to 8 p.m.

Lost Season Finale

Lost Final Chapter
Lost fans are summoned Sunday night for the end of the show

This is it! After six seasons, the final chapter airs next Sunday night. As Jacob says in "What they died for", current season's 16th episode: "You should get your friends. We're very close to the end"
And of course, that's what you should do as two big events are getting ready to pay homage to LOST and say goodbye as this show deserves.

The Grand Finale Official Party starts at Shoko at 10.00 pm sponsored by Sitges Film Festival, CUATRO and FOX. All the details on facebook.

And then you can go to the FINALE PARTY and watch the last episodes while you have a Dharma beer and wait for the final chapter (around 6.00 am!!) at Bharma, the one and only Lost-theme bar in Barcelona. It's gonna be a limited and exclusive event so you got to contact them through their website.

Good luck, and NAMASTE!
