The City of Horrors exhibition at CCCB

The city of horrors at CCCB
Exhibition Barcelona – Valencia – Palma: A History of Confluence and Divergence

The CCCB (Contemporary Culture Centre of Barcelona) and the Department of Culture and the Media of the Generalitat de Catalunya will be presenting the exhibition “BVP”. The show looks at the confluences and divergences of three Mediterranean cities: Barcelona, Valencia and Palma.

These are three cities which, at many points in time, have walked in step or moved along the same lines of force, which becomes apparent when we evaluate their history and the way they have evolved in recent centuries. In addition to their common language, we find similarities in architecture and urban planning, a comparable human geography and an urban aesthetic that unites them, though each has conserved its particularities, with periods of greater distance and even confrontation.

The exhibition will showcase the present-day situation of Barcelona, Valencia and Palma, concentrating on two fundamental aspects: the urban and the human landscape.
Sections of the exhibition include: The City of the Future, Language, The Spectacle City, The Ugly City: Urban Planning Corruption and Tourism, The Hedonistic City, The Medieval City.
Check out the BVP's website, you can contribute to the exhibition and submit your own pictures and vote for the most horrible pictures among all the uploaded.
  • When: From 26 May to 12 September 2010
  • Where: CCCB, Montalegre 5 [map]

Art of Spanish guitar festival

Enjoy Spanish classic guitar and a glass of wine in a unique place.

A double Spanish guitar concert program is on at St Anna's Church right in the heart of Barcelona. Concerts by master Alen Garagic and Barcelona Guitar Duo.

Music, architecture and wine suggest emotions, sensations and feelings that might be unforgettable. Many experts believe that the music prepares our senses for a wine tasting. This way the 15th Century Cloister of St Anna's Church is a perfect place to savour a glass of selected wine while meeting the artists after the concert.
Barcelona and guitar had always an especial band between them. The Festival Art of the Spanish Guitar keeps that spirit bringing to Barcelona the most prominent modem Guitar Maestros to the St Anna's Church, a 12th Century Gothic Treasure and a National Monument since 1886. A perfect place to enjoy a guitar concert because of its exceptional acustic.
Alen Garagic is one of the most prominent guitarists of the new generation. Defined by critics as "a sublime artist and an excellent performer, who does with the guitar what a pianist does with the piano, expressing rhythmical, dynamic, harmonic and tone contrasts, as well as the different chiaroscuros that composers have captured in their scores " (Diario ABC)

He has travelled on concert tours through many European and American countries and has been invited to festivals such as the "Antonio Ujuro" (Turkey), the "Fabricio Caroso" (Italy), the "Andres Segovia" (Spain) and the Guitars of the World in (Argentina). He has performed in important venues, such as the National Auditorium in Madrid, L'Auditori and the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Seoul and in Theatre Monumental with the Spanish Radio and Television orchestra in Madrid. He has won more than fifteen prises in International competitions, among them the first prise in the Andres Segovia International Guitar Competition and the first prize at the most important Spanish competition, patronized by the Royal Family, Guerrero Foundation Guitar Competition in Madrid.

Barcelona Guitar Duo is considered one of the best guitar duo in the world, known by their "unique synchronization, technical control and an evident finesse, precision, purity of the sound, and an outstanding expressiveness" (Minorca Daily)

The ensemble, formed by Ksenia Axelroud & Joan Benejam, makes its highly praised by the critique and the audience debut in Palau de la Musica Catalana in the year 2001 performing Concerto Madrigal far two guitars and orchestra by Joaquin Rodrigo. Since then they offered concerts in Europe, North and South America performing in some of the most important Halls of the world. They recorded for the National Catalonlan Radio, COM Radio, Radio Orfeo of Moscow, Russian Channel Cultural TV, and Spanish channel TV3, that dedicated news broadcast to them.

They obtained numerous prizes among them the first prize in the Luys de Milan International Competition. In this concert they present their last CD "Carmen" which was one of the top ten classical CD's in Spain during the 2009 season.
